    Marine Corps Base Quantico

MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. – Athletes from the National Football League visited members of base for a meet and greet with photos Feb. 6.

“There’s no greater honor that I can give than to show my appreciation and be here,” said Derrick Martin, one of the athletes that visited Quantico. “I hope I can bring that light and boost morale for the Marines”

The athletes who visited the base included Derrick Martin, a two-time Super Bowl champion and alumnus of the Green Bay Packers and the New York Giants, Josh Hawkins, a Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles alumni, and Baltimore Raven cheerleaders Bridged and Maddie.

“Marine Corps Community Services is overjoyed to find ways to provide events and programs like this to bring joy, fun and a little relaxation to our Marines, Sailors and families,” said Shelly Chapman, the MCCS marketing director. “We have many fine organizations and business partners like The Sinise Foundation that help make events like this possible and we are grateful for these relationships.”

While on base, the four athletes visited the Bruce Mess Hall, Barber Physical Activity Center, the Marine Corps Exchange and Crossroads Elementary School. During their stops, they met fans, engaged with Marines, and took photos.

During their visit to Crossroads Elementary School, they held a NFL workshop for children. Bridged and Maddie, the cheerleaders, taught routines and dances on the stage, while Martin and Hawkins practiced football drills and held a small game inside the school gymnasium.

“Enjoy the moment and soak in all the things, you guys have accomplished so much and achieved just as much,” said Hawkins.

Josh Hawkins is an undrafted free agent as of 2016, who played for the Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles, the XFL’s Dallas Renegades, Atlanta Falcons, Green Bay Packers, Carolina Panthers and the Detroit Lions.

Derrick Martin played for the Green Bay Packers, New York Giants, New England Patriots, and Chicago Bears. With the Packers, he won Super Bowl XLV over the Pittsburgh Steelers and the following year with the Giants, he won Super Bowl XLVI over the Patriots.

Throughout the year, MCCS coordinates to have celebrities and special guests on base to meet with Marines, veterans, family members and those who work on MCB Quantico.

This event was coordinated with the Gary Sinise Foundation, a nonprofit and charity dedicated to military veterans, first responders and their families.

“What you guys do is important,” said Maddie. “It affects everybody, and the things you guys are doing to serve our country is so honorable – you guys don’t get enough recognition.”
