FORT HUACHUCA, Arizona — Soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division begin their latest deployment with a colors uncasing ceremony held at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, February 18, 2025.

“This ceremony officially establishes and introduces the Joint Task Force for the Southern Border Surge at Fort Huachuca, and to this wonderful community we are now proud to call our home,” said Maj. Gen. Scott Naumann, the 10th Mountain Division Commanding General.

“Today in our division’s history, the 18th of February is an incredibly historic day,” said Naumann.

It was on this day, 80 years ago in 1945, Solders of the 10th Mountain Division launched a daring nighttime assault on Riva Ridge in Italy, where they broke through the Gothic Line of German Forces.

Naumann explained, The following day, on the 19th of February, the battle was won and the 10th Mountain Division completed their first climb to glory.” Officially laying the foundation for the Joint Task Force for the Southern Border Mission today, on the 18th of February in the year of 2025, 80 years later, links the division’s current story to their rich heritage.

“Our modern day team has taken the last few weeks to conduct the necessary reconnaissance, and looked for our stepping off point, and here we are,” Naumann said. “We’re continuing our legacy much like we did 80 years ago to this very single day.”

The 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) will serve as a Joint Task Force charged with overseeing units from across the Army in support of the Southern Border Surge, at Fort Huachuca, Arizona. The unit will operate under the direction of U.S. Northern Command who is working in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security and Customs and Border Protection.

Units from multiple installations across the U.S. Army will fall under the 10th Mountain Division Headquarters and report directly to them, while physically located in various parts of the southern United States.
