NAVAL AIR STATION SIGONELLA, Sicily (Feb. 27, 2025) – Senior Airman Alejandro Garcia Sanchez, 23, from Las Vegas, has proudly served the 7th Reconnaissance Squadron (RS) on Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella for the past six months.
“Alejandro is an exceptional airman who consistently demonstrates a motivated and optimistic attitude, elevating the work environment and inspiring those around him,” said Staff Sgt. Larry Lucie, Sanchez’s area supervisor. “His outstanding work has led to significant improvements, such as enhancing capabilities by reconstructing quick reaction checklists and relocating maps, resulting in improved timed response lethality.”
Sanchez joined the U.S. Air Force Nov. 4, 2019, to make a difference, serve his country, move out of his hometown and see the world. Sanchez felt he wanted more out of life and credits the movie Saving Private Ryan for inspiring his decision.
“To me, serving means to answer my nation’s call,” said Sanchez. “It provides a way for those eligible and interested in joining the 1 percent of our voluntary U.S. armed forces to protect the rights and freedom of all American citizens.”
His daily routine consists of attending guard mount with other flight members, patrolling 7th RS as a flight armorer and alarm monitor, and conducting training. In addition to his regular job, Sanchez is also the treasurer of the 7th RS Booster Club and is working on his associate degree in criminal justice.
“I typically try to make those around me laugh with my sense of humor to boost members’ morale,” said Sanchez. “I also like to take any opportunity provided to learn from others or to train those around me on our daily duties so the team can excel.”
Sanchez said his favorite part of the job is the responsibility vested in him to keep others safe, and that an exemplary moment of his service was receiving a CIA command coin in recognition of providing security for a specialized mission in South Korea.
His advice to aspiring service members is although it can be tough at times, serving is well worth it.
“I would want them to know if I can do it, they can do it as well,” said Sanchez. “But I would also want them to know military members face additional stressors – more than the average citizen, so I want them to understand we must adapt and overcome.”
Naval Air Station Sigonella provides consolidated operational, command and control, administrative, and advanced logistical support to U.S. and NATO forces.
