If you’re looking for a historical document, rare book, or old field manual, the Fort Novosel Technical Library and Aviation Learning Center may be the place to go.
The Technical Library is in building 9204 on Ruf Ave. across the street from the main post Center Library run by Morale Welfare and Recreation. Where the main post library has a collection geared towards a wide range of topics, and many useful services, the Tech Library focuses more on the needs of the Soldier, researcher, and historian.
“The MWR library is more like a public library that serves the general public, the Tech Library is more of an academic specialty library,” said Rebecca Kammer.
Fort Novosel has many different professional educational programs that the library supports. While the flight school is the most obvious supported function on Fort Novosel , the Tech Library also supports organizations like the Captain’s Career Course, Warrant Officer Intermediate Level Education, Warrant Officer Senior Service Education, the Survival Evasion, Resistance, and Escape School, and more.
“We have a complete collection of everything on the SERE reading list,” said Rebecca Krammerer, chief librarian of the Fort Novosel Technical Library. Krammerer went on the explain how certain books on the reading list are older and can be very hard to find.
Additionally, the collect is often used by different level of US Army Training and Doctrine Command, and even Civilians and Contractors in the Aviation field.
While it should be no surprise that the tech library has materials to support training, the library also has many historic books, documents and periodicals in its collection. This includes everything from book covering the early days of warfare in the Byzantine empire, to the entire run on Aviation Digest since it’s founding in 1955, and even back copies of the Army Flier newspaper.
“A good part of the archives are historic material and primary sources that can’t be found anywhere else” Krammerer said.
Supporting the military needs of Fort Novosel old and obsolete military field manuals, technical manuals, and other military documents. These resources can give Soldiers and instructors a chance to look at history when searching for solutions to modern problems.
“We can also help when leaders need to rewrite programs of instruction. Sometimes they’ll look back at old technical manual and field manuals to restore information that had been written out,” said Jodi Wilcox, reference librarian.
While the tech library’s collection of books, periodical, biographies, videos, audio recordings and microfilm and microfiche has been collected in support of military education and training, the library is open to the public. While only affiliated personnel can check many materials out of the library, anyone with installation access to Fort Novosel can conduct research in the library.
For the flight students, the adjoining Aviation Learning Center also contains a number of training tools like cockpit mockups they can use to practice certain procedures.
The Technical Library is open form 8 am to 6 pm Monday through Friday, and the Aviation Learning Center is open Monday through Thursday from 8 am to 7 pm, Friday from 8 am to 4 pm, and Sundays from 11 am to 7 pm.
