NAVAL SUPPORT ACTIVITY SOUDA BAY, Greece (Feb. 27, 2025) Naval Support Activity (NSA) Souda Bay was presented with an award from the Social Grocery of the Municipality of Chania on Feb. 24, 2025, for recent contributions made to local community members in need.

The award was received on behalf of the base by Cmdr. Steven Aspholm, executive officer, NSA Souda Bay.

“The Sailors and civilians who work at NSA Souda Bay live throughout the Chania municipality, and we are tremendously grateful for the warm welcome we get in the community,” said Aspholm. “It’s a pleasure to be a part of the community and our organization is eager to give back at any chance we get.”

In September 2024, NSA Souda Bay organized a donation drive to collect school supplies for the beginning of the school term that were donated to the Social Grocery. The base also donated several harvests of organic oranges to the Social Grocery that volunteers picked from a local orchard in February 2024 and February 2025.

"The contribution of NSA Souda Bay is very important in the achievement of our work, as they have offered us food and school supplies several times in the past, and continue to do so,” said Irene Kanteraki, Director of the Department of Social Policy and Equality of the Municipality of Chania. “We would like to thank the installation very much for their awareness and interest, and we would like to let them know how beneficial it is for the local community. Especially those in need.”

The Social Grocery is administered by the Department of Social Policy and Equality of the Municipality of Chania. NSA Souda Bay was one of 40 sponsors to be recognized on Monday for their contributions to the organization.

Personnel assigned to NSA Souda Bay perform an average of 30 community service projects per year that average approximately 900 man-hours of volunteer service per year. Projects from 2024 included beach and park clean-ups, cultural exchange activities with local orphanages, painting at community facilities, volunteer support at local events, and more.

The workforce of NSA Souda Bay is comprised of U.S. Navy Sailors, U.S. civilian employees and contractors, and Greek civilian employees and contractors.

“In addition to the friendships that we develop with our neighbors and community members, we also work alongside residents of Chania every day,” said Aspholm. “Greek employees make up nearly half of our workforce and their contributions are vital to our mission.”

NSA Souda Bay is an operational ashore installation that enables and supports U.S., Allied, Coalition, and partner nation forces to preserve security and stability in the European, African, and Central Command areas of responsibility.
