ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England — The pharmacy plays a critical role in supporting the 48th Fighter Wing mission by ensuring service members and their families at RAF Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall, and RAF Feltwell receive essential medications and pharmaceutical care.

Charged with providing life-saving medications and maintaining an efficient distribution process, both the outpatient and inpatient pharmacy teams work to meet the needs of the tri-base community.

"Ultimately, patient safety is our number one priority," said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Timothy Weigle, 48th Medical Support Squadron pharmacy flight commander.

The outpatient pharmacy primarily serves active-duty service members, retirees, and their dependents by dispensing medications and providing pharmaceutical counseling. Pharmacists and technicians work to ensure patients receive the correct prescriptions while educating them on proper usage and potential side effects. Additionally, they coordinate with healthcare providers to manage medication and improve patient outcomes.

Meanwhile, the inpatient pharmacy focuses on providing critical medications to those admitted to the hospital. This includes managing intravenous medications, controlled substances, and emergency drugs to support patients with serious medical conditions.

"Being part of this mission is meaningful because we get to provide life-saving medications to our patients who need it the most," said Tech. Sgt. Vetsa Dixon, 48th MDSS inpatient pharmacy noncommissioned officer in charge.

Operating in an overseas environment for the pharmacy presents its own obstacles, from supply chain delays to adapting to mission requirements. Despite these challenges, the pharmacy team remains committed to providing uninterrupted service to RAF Lakenheath service members and families.

"We are always finding ways to adapt and improve our processes to ensure our patients get the care they deserve," Weigle said.

The RAF Lakenheath pharmacy continues to be an essential part of the healthcare system, ensuring the tri-base community receives the medical support necessary to maintain readiness and well-being.
