JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas – It’s Mission Monday! Meet Staff Sgt. Benjamin Malloy, corrections specialist instructor in the Air Force Security Forces Center 320th Correctional and Rehabilitation Squadron at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California.
He oversees the training and education of more than 440 multi-service students annually and provides Air Force insight on confinement programs, ensuring the staff at 36 military confinement facilities adheres to all Department of Defense and Department of Justice regulations. He instructs students through correctional lesson plans and facilitates the development of students' practical skills through hands-on laboratory demonstrations.
“We are the foundation of Naval and Air Force corrections,” Malloy said. “For correctional specialists to be able to properly do their job at any military confinement facility, it starts with us. It’s our job to teach them what they need to know to perform their jobs to American Correctional Accreditation standards.”
We asked the Las Vegas native, who enjoys Brazilian Jujitsu, to tell us more about himself and his work.
Briefly tell us why you joined the Air Force.
I joined the Air Force because I come from a long line of past family members who served. I saw how much each person benefited from their experiences and I wanted a future like that for myself.
Why do you serve and what keeps you serving?
Being able to continue to teach what I’ve learned as a corrections officer and passing that along to the future of corrections. It continues to bring a smile every time a student tells me how thankful they are.
What do you love about your job?
Working closely with my Navy counterparts.
When it comes to your job, what keeps you motivated?
The energy students bring when it comes to teaching lectures and performing in different labs.
Describe a project/event you and your team worked on recently that gave you a great sense of accomplishment:
During every class, there is one day we will gather in the morning to complete a pepper spray course. It’s very physically and mentally demanding to put the students through. They need to be motivated and have a strong will to push themselves to limits they haven’t before. It brings great satisfaction to the instructors to see everyone come together and root for each other to pass.
Complete this sentence: I power the world’s greatest Air Force by …
Fostering resilience, maintaining discipline and providing essential support to ensure every Airman can perform at their highest potential.
