CAMP ATTERBURY, Ind. – A group of 40 U.S. Airmen from 10 different Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve units attended the Additional Duty First Sergeant Symposium, March 3-6, 2025 at the Maj. Gen. R. Martin Umbarger Conference Center.
The four-day event featured several guest speakers who covered a variety of leadership and support topics specific to the role of noncommissioned officers who volunteer to serve as assistant first sergeants. The additional duty is intended to expand the reach and capacity of their unit’s first sergeant, also known as the “first shirt.”
“It’s an exposure to what an additional duty first sergeant does, and it’s a kind of bench building for our next diamond-wearing first sergeants,” said Chief Master Sgt. Douglas Dye, senior enlisted leader, 122nd Communications Flight.
Over the last three years, the symposium has trained 91 participants from across the United States as additional duty first shirts.
Dye was the keynote speaker at the symposium this year. He shared a wealth of knowledge accrued over his 40 years of service in the Air National Guard including tips on professional development, prioritizing relationships, and investing in the next generation of leaders.
“It’s fulfilling because it’s allowing me the honor as a leader to develop my bench and develop other Airmen as they’re coming up through the ranks,” Dye said. “Getting that opportunity to stand up in front of them and use my mistakes as a teaching tool, that’s one of the things I enjoy.”
