FORT STEWART, Ga. – In an intense exercise to test their interrogation abilities, the 3rd Infantry Division hosted a training event called Marne Fury which included Human Intelligence Collectors training their interrogation skills in various languages including French, Russian, Arabic and Spanish at Fort Stewart, Georgia, March 8, 2025. Marne Fury is a language infused human training designed to collect intel from enemy forces.
“The expectation coming into the event was to be able to bring native speaker linguists as well as language instructors to oversee the command of the language by the Soldier,” said Chief Warrant Officer 4 Dale Hunter, the Human Intelligence Readiness Officer for the Department of the Army G2X. “We have far exceeded our expectations. Within the first two days of this exercise, we have seen a vast Improvement in the soldiers' command of their language as well as the skills of collecting information.”
Marne Fury is a training event that involves Army Human Intelligence Collectors interrogating native speaker role players. This marks the first time the United States Army Forces Command has conducted such training and sets a new standard for realistic and immersive military exercises.
“The primary goal is for the soldiers to have a clear understanding of the language requirements to conduct an interrogation in that language,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Steven Betancourt, a Human Intelligence Technician and the 3rd Infantry Division G2X. “In that language we also want to make sure that they clearly understand the policy said in place to the Humane treatment and to conduct interrogations.”
The California Army National Guard and the Air Force collaborated in this training exercise. The California Army National Guard provided a mobile language lab allowing remote instructor tutoring and feedback. Meanwhile, the Air Force launched the L.E.A.P program (Language, Enabler, Airman, Program) in support of all Soldiers participating in the training.
“Getting cooperation from somebody indicates a successful interrogation.” said a Soldier assigned to the 328th Military Intelligence Company. “Most of the time, people don't want to talk to you because you’re not interrogating somebody who wants to be there, but it truly comes down to asking the right questions at the right time.”
3rd ID plans to train the Human Intelligence Collectors for mission readiness. Soldiers demonstrated their lingual skills to effectively communicate and gather crucial information in diverse environments. The training ensures that the Human Intelligence Collectors are well-prepared for their missions, fostering a robust and adaptable force capable of tackling a wide range of challenges and to ensure a successful mission.
