The 27th Special Operations Medical Group, in line with the Defense Health Agency, transitioned to a new telehealth system on February 10, marking a significant step forward in providing accessible and convenient healthcare to Airmen and their families.
My Military Health’s Scheduled Virtual Visits, a new DHA service, integrates virtual, automated, and digital multi-specialty healthcare into a patient's overall care journey. This platform increases access to care for Airmen that is safe, convenient, and confidential.
All trained Mental Health technicians can operate this new platform across Cannon AFB. This virtual option enables Air Commandos to continue their mental health care regardless of their physical location, ensuring continuity of care for Air Commandos even when deployed, on leave, or at temporary duty locations leading to fewer cancellations.
“It provides Airmen more flexibility with their care,” said the mental health flight commander at the 27th SODMG. “Let’s say you had an appointment scheduled for today and things are just not going well, instead of still trying to drag yourself into the building, or cancelling, you can switch your appointment to virtual seamlessly."
This new system fully integrates with MHS Genesis, supporting providers by delivering increased access to a comprehensive view of their patients care history.
Implementing this new system comes at a time when virtual healthcare is proving increasingly vital, particularly in the realm of accessibility to mental health care. Notably, Cannon AFB experienced a 63% increase in virtual mental health appointments from 2023 to 2024.
This surge in demand highlights the growing acceptance and use of telehealth as a crucial resource for Airmen seeking mental health support.
While walk-ins and scheduled in-person visits with mental health providers remain available, the virtual option helps eliminate potential stigmas associated with seeking help. Virtual mental health care also provides more privacy, resulting in more Airmen seeking the help they need.
“The negative stigma or the fear of being seen walking to mental health has become a barrier to care for military members of all ranks.” said a 27th SOMDG Group Practice Manager. “Thankfully, increases in access to virtual care are drastically helping us to combat that stigma.”
The convenience and confidentiality offered by telehealth platforms like “My Military Health’s Scheduled Virtual Visits” empower Airmen to prioritize their mental wellbeing.
For dependents and DoD civilian employees, access to virtual mental health care services, including psychiatry, is available through the Telemynd platform.
The 27th SOMDG is confident the transition to My Military Health’s Scheduled Virtual Visit system will enhance healthcare delivery and improve the overall well-being of Air Commandos at Cannon.
