Inowrocław, Poland – The U.S. military, represented by the 1st Armored Division Combat Aviation Brigade attended an Apache Initiative lease signing agreement ceremony Feb. 27, 2025.
The Apache Initiative is a U.S.-led program designed to provide advanced Apache helicopters to NATO allies, improving interoperability and combat readiness across the alliance. This initiative plays a crucial role in enhancing the ability of allied forces to operate seamlessly in defense of shared interests and regional stability. The first four Apache helicopters are tentatively scheduled for transfer summer of 2025.
The initiative was formalized through a lease signing by Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. Kosiniak-Kamysz who emphasized the critical role Apache helicopters will play in enhancing Poland’s defense capabilities and improving interoperability with NATO partners.
“This transfer of Apache helicopters highlights the strong, enduring partnership between the United States and Poland,” said Chargé d’Affaires Daniel Lawton. “This lease agreement is also a testament to the deep and enduring U.S.-Poland alliance. More than just a transfer of helicopters, it represents our commitment to Poland’s security, our shared investment in regional stability, and the deep trust between the United States and Poland.”
Lawton continued explaining that by supporting Poland’s military modernization and building closer cooperation with the Polish 1st Aviation Brigade, we reinforce NATO’s collective defense efforts and our shared commitment to maintaining peace and security in Europe.
Additionally, the transfer will foster closer cooperation between the current rotationally deployed unit,1st AD CAB and the Polish 1st Aviation Brigade, ensuring both organizations can operate effectively in joint operations and enhance NATO's deterrence capabilities.
“This is a great opportunity for us to work with our allies and share our experience and knowledge of the operations of the AH-64 Apache with our Polish allies as we begin to train together,” said Col. Margaret Stick, commander of the 1st AD CAB. “The CAB is excited to work with the 1st Aviation Brigade of the Polish Land Forces, because it is going to be a great opportunity for us to train together, build lethality together, and increase both of our capabilities as we work toward that common goal.”
