KEYPORT, Wash. – Capt. Mike Dolbec, Unmanned Undersea Vehicle Group (UUVGRU) 1 commodore, hosted French Navy Rear Adm. Cedric Chetaille, deputy chief for operations, and director of seabed capability development, during a visit to UUVGRU 1 at Naval Base Kitsap-Keyport, Jan. 24. 2025. The visit included an overview of facilities and operations, highlighting the strong partnership between the U.S. and France in the maritime domain.
Dolbec led the tour of the UUVGRU 1 headquarters, which is responsible for the development and testing of unmanned undersea vehicles (UUV) for the U.S. Navy. He stated, “This visit serves as a testament to the strong relationship between our two nations and our commitment to working together to ensure maritime security and stability, to include Critical Undersea Infrastructure.”
Dolbec emphasized the cutting-edge technology and capabilities of multiple types of UUVs, which play a crucial role in modern naval operations and subsea and seabed warfare. Chetaille's visit highlighted the importance of UUVs and the continued efforts of the U.S. Navy to advance this technology with Allies and partners.
In addition to the tour, Chetaille also met with U.S. Navy officials and personnel to discuss areas of future subsea and seabed warfare collaboration between the U.S. and French navies. The U.S. and French navies routinely participate in bilateral and multilateral exercises and operations at sea, including Valiant Shield 2024, RIMPAC 2024, and the recent Pacific Steller 2025.
UUVGRU 1’s mission is to man, train and equip deployable forces operating unmanned undersea systems and to certify their readiness to support operational commanders globally and through all phases of conflict.
