FORT GEORGE G. MEADE, Md. — Soldiers of Fort George G. Meade Garrison stood in formation Wednesday as commanding general of the Joint Task Force-National Capital Region and the U.S. Army Military District of Washington, Maj. Gen. Trevor Bredenkamp oversaw a repatching ceremony, marking the official adoption of a new unit emblem.
The MDW patch now replaces the Army Materiel Command patch on the left shoulder sleeves of the soldiers assigned to the garrison. This change reflects an updated installation management structure aimed at streamlining decision-making and improving efficiency across Army installations.
Under a new order from the Secretary of the Army, this realignment focuses on streamlining decision-making by empowering senior commanders at Army installations. The changes aim to reduce bureaucracy, improve efficiency and clarify responsibilities across the Army installation management framework.
During the repatching ceremony, Bredenkamp emphasized the significance of this transition.
“It’s more than a simple uniform adjustment,” Bredenkamp said. “It’s really a symbol to highlight how the Army is refocusing it’s efforts and prioritizing the service delivery at Army installations around the globe.”
Bredenkamp also highlighted how the MDW patch unites Fort Meade with the broader National Capital Region.
“We have always worked together in defense of our nation,” Bredenkamp said. “But this adjustment in command alignment, we will now share a common unit identity that will not only strengthen our ability to deliver the best support but also continue to represent the best of our nation.”
Fort Meade Garrison Commander Col. Yolanda Gore reflected on the historical significance of the insignia change.
“Today, Fort Meade Garrison Soldiers make history by wearing a patch that represents more than 100 years of storied Army tradition,” Gore said. “This is a significant moment, and we are deeply honored to support the MDW mission.”
Fort Meade Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Richard Moore discussed the significance of this realignment.
“We transitioned our shoulder sleeve insignia to highlight the continuous transformation as the greatest land fighting force in the world,” Moore said. “The transition to tactical control under Senior Commanders provides additional authorities and enhances the Garrison Commanders latitude to optimize operational capabilities to support the Warfighter.”
While the patch has changed for garrison soldiers, the mission remains steadfast. Fort Meade continues to serve as the Nation’s Premier platform for Intelligence, Information, and Cyber operations.
