In a move to better support servicewomen throughout pregnancy and the postpartum period, Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) has introduced a new, specialized Obstetrics-Postpartum case manager program.
The initiative is designed to help active-duty women navigate the challenges of military service while balancing the physical, emotional, and mental demands of pregnancy and motherhood.
“Our goal with the AFSOC Specialized OB-Postpartum Care Manager program is to ensure that our servicewomen receive comprehensive, holistic care throughout their pregnancy and postpartum journey, supporting them physically, emotionally, and mentally,” said the 27th Special Operations Medical Group’s chief of medical staff.
The launch of this program reflects Cannon Air Force Bases’s commitment to upholding its standards of readiness and lethality. By providing servicewomen with the necessary support, the program ensures they maintain their physical and mental well-being, which in turn strengthens overall force readiness. The holistic approach to care allows servicewomen to remain mission-ready while navigating the challenges of motherhood, reinforcing the base’s commitment to excellence and high standards of performance.
At the heart of the program is Obstetric Care Coordination, which ensures
servicewomen receive seamless medical care, even during temporary duty or permanent change of station. It also helps women access the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program for nutritional and healthcare support. In addition to medical care, the program provides durable medical equipment (DME) like pregnancy binders, compression stockings, and breast pumps. The program provides new parent programs, physical therapy, pelvic floor rehabilitation, lactation consultation, and mental health services.
For those experiencing pregnancy loss, bereavement counseling is also provided to ensure women are supported during these difficult times.
“It’s not just about physical health; it’s about supporting the whole person. From DME to lactation consultants and mental health services, we are here to help our service members thrive physically and emotionally as they transition into motherhood,” said Hinton.
While initially offered at select bases, the program is expanding. The program’s success is measured through ongoing feedback and data, ensuring the continued evolvement to meet the needs of servicewomen striving to balance both military careers and motherhood.
