FORT CAVAZOS, TX – The Chief of the Israeli Armor Corps, Brig. Gen. Ohad Maor visited with Brig. Gen. Van Epps, the deputy commanding general of the III Armored Corps (IIIAC), to discuss the current conflict in Gaza on March 19, 2025.
Epps hosted the presentation at the Remagen Room at the IIIAC headquarters to senior Army leaders from across the installation describing the role of Israeli armored forces in the war.
Maor has been a senior officer in the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) for more than 20 years and possesses a rich and diversified command experience. He presented in-depth knowledge about Israel's current national security strategy and described his experience as a senior Israeli armor officer tasked with leading thousands of IDF soldiers.
He also provided a brief overview of the past 16 months of the IDF's operations in Gaza and discussed the role of armor in this type of conflict.
So far, the IDF has suffered 900 casualties since the conflict began in October 2023, in addition to Israel suffering 1800 civilian casualties. At least 59 people remain in the custody of Hamas and other armed militant groups inside the Gaza Strip.
Maor and his staff emphasized that bringing all Israeli hostages home was a primary motivator for his soldiers to keep fighting and winning in the conflict.
The presentation also focused on the importance of individual and unit discipline, battlefield mission command, and massing combat power to achieve tactical objectives.
One of Maor's reserve armor brigade commanders offered a personal testimony of what he has seen in Gaza over the past 16 months and within his formation.
"You have to be willing to go into a mission with a 60-80% solution and be okay with accepting risk," he said. "By doing so you maintain momentum and prevent the enemy from regrouping and trying to reattack your forces."
This visit from the Israeli armor officers provided an opportunity and learning experience for IIIAC leaders to hear about changes to modern warfare, especially within armored formations.
After the event, Epps told Maor and his staff he was highly grateful for his visit to IIIAC and Fort Cavazos and appreciate him taking the time to provide them with a first-hand perspective to this on-going conflict.
