CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea – Royal Canadian Air Force Capt. Kylie Penney, originally from Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia, recently participated in Exercise Freedom Shield 25, a multinational military training exercise in the Republic of Korea aimed at enhancing military readiness and cooperation.
The exercise brought together forces from the ROK, U.S., and other Member States of the United Nations Command, which oversees the armistice agreement that halted Korean War hostilities in 1953.
For Penney, the exercise was both a professional and personal highlight. "It was my first time working in North Asia, and I appreciated learning about UNC while building relationships with service members from various nations,” she said. As a Public Affairs Officer, she played a vital role in managing communications and strengthening ties between the multinational forces. Penney described her participation as a privilege, emphasizing the importance of contributing to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. She also reflected on Canada's longstanding support to South Korea and her pride in continuing that legacy.
However, being away from family during such missions is not without its challenges. Penney missed her youngest son’s birthday while in Korea but noted that her family found ways to overcome the separation by celebrating early. "My family is very supportive, with my husband taking care of my two sons while I'm away,” she explained.
This is not the first time Penney has represented Canada internationally. In June 2024, she participated in Exercise VALIANT SHIELD in Guam, working alongside U.S. and Japanese public affairs personnel. Her service exemplifies Canada’s commitment to promoting peace, security, and Canadian interests in the Indo-Pacific region.
