It’s Mission Monday! Meet Denise Renaghan, a functional lead and senior technical advisor for the Automated Readiness Information System, ARIS, and Fire and Emergency Services – Information Management System, FES-IMS, at the Air Force Civil Engineer Center Business Info Systems and Mission Support Directorate at JBSA-Lackland.
She and her team ensure seamless functionality of these two critical civil engineering information technology systems. This involves collaborating with stakeholders across AFIMSC, AFCEC, Air Force Reserve and Guard, and Air Force Life Cycle Management Center acting as the Program Management Office to evaluate and implement functional requirements for these systems.

“Through daily collaboration with Air Force stakeholders and our PMO, we ensure ARIS and FES-IMS effectively support the critical needs of readiness personnel and Fire and Emergency Services,” Renaghan said. “We use a process that involves rigorous review by dedicated working groups, prioritizing the approved requirements, and collaborating with development teams to integrate new features as we provide ongoing user support, training and guidance to maximize system effectiveness.”

We asked the Arizona native, who enjoys travel, spending time outdoors and volunteering as a trail watch at the San Antonio Parks in her free time, to tell us more about herself and her work.

Briefly tell us why you joined civil service?
I joined civil service after I received an opportunity to work in environmental compliance at JBSA-Lackland. Prior to that, I had been working on a groundwater research project for the San Antonio Water System and was interested in venturing out to try something new. Once I became a civil servant, I was hooked. I love the community and team-oriented aspect of working for the Air Force.

Why do you serve and what keeps you serving?
I remember my first day in the personnel center at Lackland, feeling lost and overwhelmed by all the information I was receiving. Then, all of us first-day Air Force employees were gathered to give our Oath of Office. I remember looking around at everyone with me in the room and wondering if they were as excited as me. That feeling of pride, belonging and unity I will never forget. Proud to serve!

What do you love about your job?
I’ve had the opportunity to work in several roles within AFCEC. Working on the ARIS and FES-IMS Functional Management Office program has provided me an opportunity to meet people outside of the environmental community such as those in Fire and Emergency Services, Force Service Support, Security Forces, Emergency Management, Expeditionary and Readiness and many more.

When it comes to your job, what keeps you motivated?
I’m motivated by working with mission-oriented people and I love a challenge. My team is dedicated to ensuring user needs are met and my user communities are appreciative to that dedication of service. The challenge is ensuring all that energy is focused and channeled into limited development capacity.

Describe a project/event you and your team worked on recently that gave you a great sense of accomplishment:
We ‘ve been able to get functional releases out that had been on hold due to a Security Risk Tolerance Baseline being conducted by our PMO. In ARIS, we recently deployed the ability to manage combat arms ranges. In FES-IMS, a new dispatch client user interface went out that not only makes the interface look more modern but also has a dimmer slide to adjust screen brightness.

How does what you do support AFIMSC’s strategic priorities?
Our work with ARIS and FES-IMS directly aligns with AFIMSC’s strategic priorities by increasing lethality and readiness. We ensure readiness personnel have the tools they need through ARIS to manage training and equipment for deployment and, through FES-IMS, to empower Fire and Emergency Services with efficient incident tracking and response capabilities.

Complete this sentence: I power the world’s greatest Air Force by …
Maintaining warfighters’ readiness training and equipment system and the Fire and Emergency Services records and dispatch system!

Is there anything else you’d like to add which might help people understand the importance of what you do for the Department of the Air Force?
I’d like to thank the ARIS and FES-IMS user communities for their patience over the past few years as we focused on essential system upgrades, including a new hosting platform and enhanced security measures through a security risk tolerance baseline. There are still some technical debt items to be processed through development, but functional requirements are now being worked, and great things are coming!
