The National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE) takes a holistic approach to each patient’s treatment, and physical therapy is part of treatment for many service members seeking care for traumatic brain injury (TBI) at the NICOE. That’s because physical symptoms of TBI extend beyond head pain to other symptoms that may also impact recovery from a TBI.
Individuals impacted by TBI can experience dizziness and balance issues. When service members report symptoms such as frequent falls, physical therapists assess them to identify the cause(s) and develop tailored treatment plans to address the issues. Physical therapists also work closely with audiologists to conduct comprehensive evaluations of patients’ balance, or vestibular issues, which are essential for diagnosing and managing balance disorders associated with TBI.
The NICoE incorporates a variety of innovative technologies to deal with balance issues, such as the use of virtual reality for advanced balance assessments. Additionally, the NICoE uses computerized dynamic posturography to replicate a visual environment to enhance the providers’ assessment. The machine can also be used to provide training to improve balance and mobility. These technologies offer more precise diagnostics and are also used in research on how to help service members manage balance disorders.
By using cutting-edge technology and a holistic model of care, the NICoE’s physical therapists are better able to treat service members’ pain, both physically and mentally.
NICoE provides world class medical, neurological, rehabilitative, behavioral health, advanced imaging and diagnostics, education, and complementary services to meet the whole person needs of service members impacted by TBI.
