FORT MAGSAYSAY, Philippines - Soldiers from the U.S. Army’s 2nd Battalion, 11th Field Artillery Regiment (2-11 FA), and the Philippine Army Artillery Regiment conducted a bilateral training exercise focused on Artillery Degraded Operations in support of Salaknib 2025 on Fort Magsaysay, Philippines March 19, 2025. The exercise reinforced the enduring partnership between the two armies and highlighted the importance of knowledge-sharing in today’s modern environment.
Salaknib 2025 is an annual exercise between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the U.S. Military designed to strengthen bilateral interoperability, capabilities, trust, and cooperation built over decades of shared experiences.
The bilateral training enhanced both forces' critical skills for maintaining artillery effectiveness in communication-denied environments. Soldiers from 2-11 FA shared best practices on target acquisition, manual gunnery techniques, and adapting artillery operations when digital systems are compromised. In turn, the Philippine Army Artillery Regiment shared their expertise, detailing operational experiences in degraded environments and strategies for sustaining fire missions under challenging conditions.
“Exercises like this prepare both armies for a better understanding of how each sustain and execute artillery operations,” said Sergeant Anthony Resendiz, a Gunner from 2-11 FA. “We give them the best knowledge that we have from our books, and they give us the best knowledge from theirs.”
The 2-11 FA welcomed the opportunity for combined artillery training, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in strengthening interoperability and modernizing artillery capabilities. Staff Sergeant Jesus Hernandez, a Section Chief from 2-11 FA, noted that exchanging knowledge enhances both forces' ability to operate effectively and improves bilateral operational readiness.
“I could tell that their practices are going to help improve our times for laying the howitzer,” Hernandez said. “I've heard nothing but great feedback from them; they're learning a lot from us too.”
Salaknib provides a venue for both participating nations to advance interoperability, but most importantly, we both learn and grow during this exercise. Interpersonal relationships between Americans and the people of the Philippines are the bedrock of our nations’ unwavering alliance. Our countries’ long-standing friendship grows stronger every time we work together.
