ADAZI, Latvia — U.S. Army soldiers from Bravo Company, 10th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, in support of Task Force Iron, joined other multinational soldiers from Albania, Canada, Czechia, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Spain, and the United Kingdom for NATO exercise Verboom in Adazi, Latvia, March 14-21, 2025.

Verboom is the NATO Multinational Battle Group Latvia-led engineering exercise focusing on joint training through various events, including engineer reconnaissance, obstacle construction, joint capability breeching, target demolitions, and professional development events.

“Training like this is crucial to success on the battlefield”, said U.S. Army Capt. Mark Fischer, Bravo company commander, 10th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division. “Learning how our NATO partners train and fight as engineers only strengthens us. It also allows us to look at our own doctrine and training methods to see if they should be modified.”

On the first day of the exercise, teams made up of members from various countries were tasked with quickly deploying forces to a designated location using different armored vehicles. Teams then breached triple-layered concertina wire and leveled two earthen barriers using heavy equipment. The final obstacle necessitated using a M1074 joint assault bridge system, enabling teams to access their final target location.
This type of hands-on field training enhances combat readiness and interoperability for potential real-world scenarios.

“Working in unison like this and learning new techniques and methods has really improved our time on reaching our target even faster,” said U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Austin Goforth, a squad leader for Bravo Company, 10th Brigade Engineer Battalion.

The exercise’s successful completion emphasized the importance of international cooperation and NATO’s defense readiness and highlighted the U.S.’s mutual ongoing commitment to securing the Baltic region.

Task Force Iron's mission is to engage in multinational training and exercises across the continent to increase lethality while strengthening partnerships with our NATO allies and regional security partners. The task force provides combat credible forces to V Corps, America’s only forward-deployed corps in Europe.
