FORT MAGSAYSAY, Philippines – Soldiers from the Philippine Army Artillery Regiment and the U.S. Army’s 2nd Battalion, 11th Field Artillery Regiment, 25th Division Artillery, conducted joint artillery training focused on the Fire Control Alignment Test in preparation for Salaknib 2025 at Fort Magsaysay, Philippines, on March 20, 2025.
The Fire Control Alignment Test (FCAT) ensures that artillery systems are correctly calibrated by aligning fire control instruments and optical sights and aiming references to a common standard. This process is essential for maintaining accuracy and consistency in indirect fires. During the training, U.S. and Philippine forces conducted joint alignment procedures, enabling them to detect and correct any system deviations. By standardizing their approach, the two armies improved technical precision and deepened interoperability—enhancing their ability to deliver coordinated, effective fires during combined operations.
“Combined training with other nations builds many relationships,” said U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Roe Daneyel Baluyut, chief of the third section with Alpha Battery, 2-11 Field Artillery Regiment. “Working hand in hand, helping each other with our equipment and maneuvers, is essential to mission success.”
During the training, U.S. soldiers were instructed on the M119A3 Howitzer, while their Philippine partners shared expertise on the M101 Howitzer. This ensured that both forces understood each other’s equipment and maintenance procedures. The exchange allowed both armies to improve their artillery coordination, a key factor in bilateral operations.
“The training taught today gives us an advantage,” Baluyut said. “Ensuring that both the U.S. Army M119A3 and the Philippine Army M101 are serviceable and firing accurately is critical to maintaining operational effectiveness.”
Salaknib 2025 is an annual bilateral exercise designed to enhance the interoperability, capabilities, trust, and cooperation between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the U.S. military. Through exercises like these, both forces strengthen their ability to respond to regional security challenges and uphold their shared defense commitments.
By continuing to develop their skills and build mutual trust, U.S. and Philippine Soldiers ensure they remain ready to execute combined operations in constantly evolving environments.
