    18th Wing

KADENA AIR BASE, Japan – U.S. Air Force Col. Joshua Lundeby, 18th Wing deputy commander, flew his last sortie with the 18th Wing and 909th Air Refueling Squadron on March 19, 2025, before departing for his next assignment.

Lundeby served as the deputy commander for two years, taking the position in June 2023. Less than a year after taking command, he played a crucial role in Kadena’s response to a tsunami alert, providing evacuation assistance to the towns surrounding the base.

Prior to his time as the Wing’s deputy commander, Lundeby served in a variety of command and staff positions, including Senior Executive Officer to the Air Mobility Commander, and Military Assistant to the Under Secretary of the Air Force.

He also served as an evaluator pilot in the Special Operations Low Level II program and the C-17A Formal Training Unit, and is a graduate of the United States Air Force Weapons School.

Lundeby is a Command Pilot with over 3,100 flight hours in the T-37B, T-1A, C-17A, and KC-135R/T and has flown more than 280 combat missions in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM and Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, logging more than 740 combat hours.

Upon concluding his time at Kadena Air Base, Lundeby will travel to Vance Air Force Base, Oklahoma, where he will take command of the 71st Flying Training Wing. This Wing is responsible for training Air Force and Allied student pilots for worldwide deployment and Aerospace Expeditionary Force support.

Col. Lundeby is excited to return to the place his career in the Air Force began, and to inspire the next generations of pilots.
