JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas – It’s Mission Monday! Meet Briana Simon, a financial technician in the Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center Financial Management Directorate at Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota.

She and her team provide direct travel support by administering non-Defense Travel System vouchers for active-duty members and civilians. The team ensures each member receives payment of entitlements by reviewing and processing vouchers for permanent change of station moves, deployments, evacuation travel, distinguished visitors and movement of personal property.

“I love that my job provides daily challenges in the form of puzzles,” Simon said. “Each voucher the center receives is unique, requiring you to see different perspectives to come to a solution in determining what travel entitlements the member should receive. Once you decipher what entitlements need to be paid, you are able gain a sense of accomplishment.”

We asked Simon, who has always felt a connection with the Air Force after growing up with an active-duty parent, to tell us more about herself and the work she does for the Department of the Air Force.

When it comes to your job, what keeps you motivated?
I remain motivated by the thought that each voucher I touch is linked to an actual member who I am assisting during a possibly stressful or pivotal moment in their life. This encourages me to process and review travel vouchers efficiently to ensure the member is paid entitlements accurately and in a timely manner.

Describe a project/event you and your team worked on recently that gave you a great sense of accomplishment: Recently, we mobilized a specialized team to assist those affected by the consecutive hurricanes that hit multiple installations across the southeastern United States. We sent individuals to each base to assist members one-on-one. As a team, we’ve completed over 2,000 evacuation payments.

How does what you do support AFIMSC’s strategic priorities?
As a financial technician, I am able to assist and provide direct support for entitlements efficiently and in a timely manner to enhance the Air Force’s mobility capability allowing for increased readiness.

What do you like to do outside of work?
I enjoy spending time with my dogs, Angus Cobretti and Gypsy Rose, and my family. Growing up in a family of mechanics, I’ve always been surrounded by beautiful vintage cars and enjoy helping with restoration projects.
