The South Carolina Emergency Management Division hosted a full-scale exercise March 10-13, at the State Emergency Operations Center here, bringing together members of the South Carolina Emergency Response Team and local and federal agencies, non-governmental organizations and private partners.

The multi-day exercise, dubbed “All Out of Juice,” included participation from more than 46 agencies. One of those agencies in this year’s exercise was the South Carolina National Guard.

U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Chad Taylor, NCOIC of Emergency Support Function 19, was one of the National Guard Soldiers who participated in the exercise. His role was to coordinate National Guard support and resources
During emergencies and disasters, the National Guard would work with other state and local emergency managers and first responders to save lives, protect property and assist with the restoration of essential services and critical infrastructure.

“The National Guard provided support to the civilian authorities and first responders,” said Taylor. “We can bolster their disaster response capacity.”
More than 500 local and state personnel participated in the annual effort, which is designed to ensure readiness and coordination between all levels of government and various emergency response organizations in the event of a pipeline disruption during extreme cold.

“The most import take away from this state exercise is reenforcing the relationships that the SCNG has with the state and counties’” Taylor said. “These exercises show the community that the National Guard will always be there to provide the best support that we are capable of.”

The exercise is planned months in advance by emergency preparedness experts and coordinated by SCEMD and its SERT partners.

“This kind of training is crucial to strengthening our ability to respond to large-scale emergencies,” said SCEMD Director Kim Stenson. “By simulating potential real-world challenges, we can identify areas for improvement and ensure that South Carolina is as prepared as possible for any situation.”
