RAF MILDENHALL, England -- Some people may like their Prime BEEF paired with mashed potatoes, but the U.S. Air Force prefers COMMs.

Airmen at the 100th Air Refueling Wing have been migrating to a more improved training regimen since late 2024.

These trainings, marked as Proficiency and Contingency Readiness Days, are about getting Airmen back into the habit of physically completing training objectives when available; versus, completing computer-based training programs, better known as CBTs.

“At the core, this training approach sharpens our team up and down the chain by exposing each member to real world challenges, and forces each of us to think critically,” said Master Sgt. Brandon Link, 100th Civil Engineer Squadron heavy repair superintendent. “The training delivers the hard to answer questions and makes us do the hard work. We are much better for it.”

With these BEEFed-up standards, operations that Airmen need to complete - with success being the only option - are expected to flow more seamlessly.

“Communication, problem-solving, adaptability, leadership, followership, teamwork, and of course the individual technical functions across the airfield recovery process, these are crucial for us to be able to deliver air superiority,” said Link. “These trainings are cornerstone to building each Airman’s confidence in the respective competencies.”

This training aims to not only impact hyper specific job skills in contingency environments but also play a vital role in compounding other training, creating more skilled Airmen.

“The Airmen thrive when given the opportunity to work on dynamic challenges, they want to prove their readiness,” said Link.
The 100th ARW’s goal, is to provide training that requires members to participate in-person alongside other career fields not only makes Airmen more effective, but a more cohesive team.

The 100th ARW’s boots-on-the-ground approach towards proficiency and contingency readiness days help enable the growth for solid foundations, enabling Airmen to thrive. This showcases some of the best efforts the U.S. Air Force has made to remain ready in an ever-changing warfighting domain.
