HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Fifteen U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command and Team Redstone members were recognized and honored for their commitment to national defense.
The Air, Space and Missile Defense Association presented achievement and service excellence awards to local government and contractor employees in recognition of their achievements in the development, test, and deployment of air, space, and missile defense systems during the ASMDA annual membership luncheon, March 31.
“I’m glad to be here alongside leaders from our city and state, industry partners and innovators from the missile defense community in Huntsville,” said Richard P. De Fatta, USASMDC deputy to the commanding general. “Today we recognize achievements from service excellence to technical expertise that really showcase the value and talent of the Huntsville community. For every award given today, there are dozens of other individuals and teams across the community who are working just as hard at tackling the problems we have ahead of us right now.
“As we seek to ensure peace through strength, we have opportunities to revolutionize our approach to deterrence,” he added. “New challenges give chances for new, innovative solutions; the kinds of solutions that people like our awardees today have been championing during their careers, the kinds of solutions that the new generation of scientists, strategists, and technical experts are ready to propose.”
De Fatta said there are professionals throughout the Department of Defense working to figure out how to work to keep the homeland safe in peace through strength as well as the opportunity to revolutionize the nation’s approach to deterrence.
“As we look forward, we can also look around at what we’re already doing that’s working,” De Fatta said. “We have a wealth of new technology and innovation, in multiple domains, at our fingertips. “There’s exciting research happening in areas like directed energy that is poised to revolutionize the way we attack these opportunities in the coming years. The success of Golden Dome and other important efforts will always depend on the people we have working it and this is where Huntsville and our defense community shines.
“The character of conflict is changing, this fact is at the heart of transformation in contact,” he added. “Warfare is becoming more complex, this is why our Army is acting to get ahead of it, even though it is a tough balance to conduct current operations, generate ready forces, and transform simultaneously. If history is any gauge though, we will get the job done and Huntsville will play an outsized role in our nation’s success.”
Corry Cox, ASMDA president, said that for the past 30 years, ASMDA has enhanced the workforce and fostered education for the next generation of youth.by supporting community events for veterans; presenting space and missile defense technical achievement and service excellence awards; providing scholarships for science, technology, engineering and math students, as well as, Space Camp scholarships; and exposing students to opportunities on Redstone Arsenal through outreach events such as Adventures in Engineering.
“Today is a great event and was a fantastic day to get the word out about the great things we are doing at ASMDA,” Cox said. “The technical expertise here in Huntsville is world-class. As the air, space and missile defense problems and threat space continues to evolve, it is going to take all of us in this community to get after those issues. And what a great place Huntsville is to accomplish that.
“Mr. De Fatta did a great job of reminding us of SMDC and Team Redstone’s critical place in national defense and how they are getting after the problems of tomorrow,” he added.
