A Determined Journey: Path to Engineering Duty Officer Qualification
Newport News, Va - From the quiet fields of Holmen, Wisconsin, to the challenging world of the U.S. Navy, Lt. Cmdr. Matthew Kruse’s journey to becoming a Nuclear Engineering Duty Officer (EDO) is nothing short of inspiring. With unwavering dedication, Kruse recently achieved his EDO qualification, a mark of expertise and leadership that signifies his integral role in building and maintaining the Navy’s fleet—particularly its aircraft carriers. 1 April 2025.
Shaped by Small-Town Roots - Growing up in Holmen, Kruse credits his small-town upbringing and early jobs for instilling independence and confidence. From working as a farmhand to repairing computers, he developed a strong work ethic and an ability to excel with minimal oversight. These formative experiences laid the groundwork for a future of leading others and solving complex problems.
The Call to Serve - Kruse’s decision to join the Navy was sparked during his undergraduate studies at Missouri University of Science and Technology. Drawn to the opportunity to work with the world’s most advanced nuclear reactors, he pursued a Bachelor’s in Nuclear Engineering alongside a minor in Mathematics. But it wasn’t just a love for technical knowledge that guided his path—he aspired to lead and support others in their success, a vision that propelled him toward a career in the military.
An Impressive Naval Resume - Before embarking on the path to becoming an EDO, he served in various roles, gaining experience across the fleet:
• Communications Officer aboard USS Laboon (DDG 58), where he earned his Surface Warfare pin.
• Reactor Electrical Division Officer aboard USS George Washington (CVN 73) during its Refueling Complex Overhaul (RCOH).
• Battle Watch Captain at Commander, U.S. 2nd Fleet.
• Assistant Project Officer at Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Conversion and Repair, Newport News, USN, where he currently supports USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74)’s RCOH.
Additionally, Lt Cmdr. Kruse’s academic achievements include earning two Master of Science degrees—Naval Construction and Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering—from the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Pursuing the EDO Qualification - The road to becoming an Engineering Duty Officer is a rigorous one, requiring technical expertise, leadership skills, and intense preparation. For Kruse, this meant countless hours of studying and rehearsing in the weeks leading up to his EDO board—a challenging interview process before a panel of already qualified EDOs and engineering experts.
Despite the demands of his regular duties, he carved out time for preparation, even dedicating two full weeks to study with the support of his project team. “The knowledge was easy to learn thanks to all the experts available to answer questions here at SUPSHIP,” he shared, reflecting on the collaborative spirit that played a pivotal role in his success.
A Proud Achievement - Earning the EDO qualification is both a personal and professional milestone. As one of only 50 Nuclear EDOs in the Navy, he now holds a position that allows him to contribute to the vital task of building and maintaining the fleet. Yet, he remains humble about the journey ahead. “Even though I’m qualified, I have only just begun to learn about Navy shipbuilding,” he remarked, expressing his eagerness to continue growing in his field.
Looking Ahead - As Kruse reflects on his journey, he emphasizes the importance of teamwork and building connections. “You can’t earn this qualification alone,” he advised. His commitment to learning and prioritizing tasks has not only shaped his success but will undoubtedly continue to define his career in the Navy.
Through determination, collaboration, and a passion for leadership, Lt Cmdr. Matthew Kruse exemplifies what it means to serve with excellence. His story is a testament to the dedication required to earn the Engineering Duty Officer Qualification Insignia and the bright future that lies ahead for those who aspire to follow in his footsteps.
