SAN DIEGO (April 1, 2025) – Chief Petty Officers (CPOs) from Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) gathered today at Flag Circle to celebrate the 132nd Chief Petty Officer Birthday with a traditional cake-cutting ceremony, honoring the legacy, leadership, and unwavering commitment of the Navy’s senior enlisted leaders.

The event followed a longstanding tradition of recognizing the role of Chief Petty Officers as the backbone of the Navy. The celebration builds upon yesterday’s gathering, where the NMCSD CPO Mess served lunch to patients and staff, reinforcing the Chiefs’ dedication to service, teamwork, and mission readiness.

“Being a Chief Petty Officer is more than just wearing the anchors—it’s about serving our Sailors, leading with humility, and ensuring our warfighters are always ready,” said Command Master Chief Adolfo Gonzalez. “Today, we honor 132 years of deckplate leadership, and we recommit ourselves to the values that define the Chiefs’ Mess: strength, unity, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.”

During the ceremony, the oldest and youngest CPOs in attendance cut the cake together, symbolizing the continuity of leadership and mentorship within the Mess. This year Master Chief Hospital Corpsman Lukas Gardner, NMCSD Director For Administration’s senior enlisted leader, and Chief Hospital Corpsman Nathaniel Garrett, NMCSD deputy reserve program director, had the honor, respectively.

“As Chiefs, we’re often focused on results—driving efficiency, meeting benchmarks, and ensuring the hospital runs smoothly,” said Master Chief Hospital Corpsman Brandon Carrillo, NMCSD Director For Nursing senior enlisted leader. “Ultimately, it is our character that defines us on the deckplates, in the wards, and in the eyes of our Sailors.”

The celebration continues tomorrow with the Chiefs leading the Warrior Readiness Training Program (WAROps), a course designed to guide active-duty warfighters toward optimal health, wellness, and readiness goals. The program provides access to health coaching, innovative fitness plans, and wellness education, ensuring service members are physically and mentally prepared for their mission.

The mission of NMCSD is to provide a superior experience for our patients, staff, and warfighters. NMCSD employs more than 5,000 active-duty military personnel, civilians, and contractors in southern California to deliver exceptional care afloat and ashore.
