Behind the scenes of the nation’s most prestigious military ceremonies and governmental functions, the Fleet Operations team at Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Washington Public Works Department (PWD) Washington ensures seamless transportation support for critical missions.
“Transportation plays a critical role within the National Capital Region, supporting high visibility Navy missions while providing direct support to the Naval District Washington Regional Operations Center and Joint Task Force, Military District Washington,” said Ryan Costa, Transportation Division director. “The team remains ready, willing and flexible to respond to various types of mission requirements at a moment’s notice.”
Led by Fleet Operations Supervisor Rodney Smithers, the team provides essential transportation services for “No Fail” missions that include U.S. Ceremonial Guard and Navy Band performances at Arlington National Cemetery and presidential functions.
“First and foremost, the missions would not be completed without the dedicated employees we have here in our department,” said Smithers. “We have developed a unique bond with the Ceremonial Guard and Navy Band which enables us to keep an open line of communication.”
The team demonstrated exceptional readiness during President Jimmy Carter’s funeral at the Washington National Cathedral. Fleet Operations coordinated numerous missions with precision and reliability.
“The daily efforts of our Transportation team are crucial for mission success in the National Capital Region. The team’s ability to adjust, adapt, and execute is awe-inspiring,” said PWD Washington Deputy Public Works Officer James Thompson.
The Executive Motor Pool balances scheduled transportation with unexpected requests through careful coordination. “The Executive Motor Pool continues to play a crucial role in supporting leadership productivity, safety and comfort, contributing to the command’s success by navigating excellence, one ride at a time,” said Eric Tucker, the motor pool supervisor.
The team also provides critical support for Capitol Hill transportation and maintains contingency plans for both routine and emergency transportation at the Vice President’s Residence.
