PAKTIKA PROVINCE, Afghanistan– Afghan national security forces and U.S. Soldiers with Company A, 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment conducted a series of combat patrols in Yaya Khel district, Paktika province, Afghanistan, May 6-8.
The movements consisted of multiple cordon and search missions and key leader engagements with the village elders.
"The purpose of this operation was to find the enemy's safe haven and show him that he was no longer welcome in the area," said U.S. Army Capt. Joshua Powers, commander of Company A., 3-187th Inf. Regt, from Atlanta, Ga. "All of our forces, did an excellent job achieving this mission and acting as ambassadors of the Afghan Government to the people."
The surge operations began with a combined cordon and search of the Mogul Khel and Sharqi Warki villages, May 6. ANSF fought for two hours against a platoon of insurgents, armed with a combination of rocket propelled grenade launchers, medium machine guns and AK-47 rifles.
The ANA captured an improvised explosive device emplacer and confiscated 12 pressure plates, one RPG launcher and two radios, May 7.
Day three consisted of a search of Janubi Nakum Village taking the militants operating in the area by surprise. The insurgent forces were unable to react in a efficient manner and resulted in detonating two IEDs accidentally, injuring three of their own while causing no damage to civilians or security forces, Powers said.
"I am very proud of all the Soldiers and the job they are doing to bring freedom to Paktika province," said Afghan national army Brig. Gen. Dawlat Khan, commander of the Afghan uniform police.
All three days ended with meetings with the community leaders to discuss what had happened and why it was necessary.
I am confident that the enemy will think twice before conducting attacks in this area again," Powers said.
