The Air Force Medical Command held its official patching ceremony April 1, 2025, symbolizing the significance of the establishment of the Department’s first-ever medical command in the 75 years of the Air Force Medical Service.
Traditionally, the patching ceremony symbolizes the formal recognition of a unit's operational status, marking a moment of pride and accomplishment for service members as they embrace their new mission and responsibilities. The transition to AFMEDCOM, however, is about enhancing the capabilities of Air Force medics to execute their mission - ensuring Airmen and Guardians are ready to fly, fight and win, while supporting the warfighter with medical capability in a complex and contested operational environment.
“AFMEDCOM strengthens our ability to equip, empower, and position every medic to provide the highest level of care wherever needed,” Maj. Gen. Sean T. Collins, AFMEDCOM Commander, said. “While our adversaries continue searching for weaknesses to exploit, our determination to innovate ensures our warfighters are focused on the mission and best positioned to dominate any battlespace.”
AFMEDCOM achieved initial operating capability March 12, 2025, and transferred its first unit and Airmen medics shortly thereafter, reinforcing readiness, and ensuring a smooth transition for all medical personnel. It is on pace to reach full operating capability by the end of 2027.
