On March 31, Col. Michael Power, 377th Air Base Wing and installation commander, toured Kirtland Air Force Base’s withdrawn area to observe the recently installed advanced wildfire detection sensors by Team Kirtland. These state-of-the-art sensors, part of the Wildland Urban Interface Wildfire Detection Project, serve as an early warning system, enabling rapid response to potential wildfires that threaten not only the installation but also the surrounding Albuquerque community.
During the visit, Power received a firsthand look at how these fire detection systems enhance early warning capabilities, allowing for swift intervention before fires can spread. The sensors are capable of detecting a wide range of fire indicators, including particulate matter, temperature changes, and gases such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur oxides. By integrating cutting-edge technology, Team Kirtland is taking proactive measures to mitigate fire risks while maintaining a strong commitment to environmental stewardship.
Kirtland’s remote area, home to diverse wildlife and sensitive ecosystems, plays a critical role in the region’s environmental balance. The installation of the wildfire detection sensor system marked a groundbreaking achievement in October of 2024, as it became the first system of its kind within both the Department of Defense and the state of New Mexico. With the deployment of these fire detection systems, the base is not only protecting mission-essential assets but also serving as a first line of defense against wildfires that could impact nearby residential areas and public lands.
Power commended the team’s dedication to both mission readiness and ecological responsibility, highlighting how the base’s efforts contribute to the safety of the broader Albuquerque region. He emphasized that early detection enables firefighters and other supporting mission partners to respond more quickly to extinguish fires, preventing large-scale wildfires that are difficult to control and can cause devastating loss of life, property, and natural resources.
The visit underscores Kirtland’s commitment to leveraging innovative solutions for wildfire prevention, ensuring the protection of personnel, infrastructure, and the surrounding community. Team Kirtland remains steadfast in its mission to manage land responsibly while strengthening partnerships that benefit both the base and its neighbors.
