NAVAL AIR STATION NORTH ISLAND, Calif. -- At the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit (CNATTU) North Island, staff members take pride in fostering the next generation of aviation professionals, ensuring they receive the mentorship, guidance, and hands-on experience necessary to excel in the fleet. Their mission extends beyond training; we are committed to developing future warfighters by providing exposure to naval aviation maintenance and supporting individuals through every stage of their journey—from initial interest in the Navy to becoming fully qualified sailors.

One of the best examples of this commitment is the story of Aviation Structural Mechanic Airman Recruit Joshua Keesing. Back in April 2024, Keesing first stepped aboard CNATTU North Island as a visitor, eager to learn more about the aviation maintenance community and what a career in the Navy could offer.

Under the leadership of then Executive Officer (now Commanding Officer) Cmdr. Rob Kersey and with the support of HSM-41 Maintenance Officer Lt. Cmdr. Howard Chase and CNATTU North Island staff, including Aviation Electronics Technician Second Class Petty Officer Joshua Curtin, Keesing was introduced to the possibilities within naval aviation maintenance. He had the opportunity to meet with dedicated professionals who not only shared their experiences but also guided him through the steps required to join the Navy.

This personalized mentorship was made possible through the Every Sailor is a Recruiter (ESAR) program, an initiative designed to encourage all sailors to actively support recruitment efforts and inspire the next generation of service members. The program goes beyond simply introducing potential recruits to the Navy—it provides them with hands-on exposure, direct engagement with experienced sailors, and a clear path forward. The mentorship and encouragement Keesing received during his initial visit played a pivotal role in shaping his decision to join the Navy.

Fast forward to today, and Keesing is no longer just a visitor—he has returned to CNATTU North Island as a student. His journey is a testament to the impact that direct engagement and mentorship can have on those considering a future in naval aviation maintenance. His story is not just about joining the Navy; it’s about being inspired, supported, and set up for success from day one.

At CNATTU North Island, we recognize that recruitment and training go hand in hand. Our mission is not just about ensuring sailors have the technical skills required for the fleet—it’s about instilling a sense of pride, purpose, and dedication to service. Programs like ESAR reinforce the idea that every sailor plays a role in strengthening the Navy, ensuring operational readiness, and maintaining the highest standards of excellence.

Mentorship: The Key to Building the Future of Naval Aviation Maintenance

Keesing’s success is just one example of how mentorship and engagement can make a difference, but it’s far from the only one. Across the fleet, sailors play a vital role in shaping the future by sharing their knowledge, experiences, and enthusiasm with those who aspire to serve. The impact of these efforts extends beyond recruitment—it helps build a stronger, more capable force, ensuring that the Navy continues to be a dominant force in global operations.

For those considering a career in naval aviation maintenance, the journey may seem daunting, but you are not alone. The sailors and leadership at CNATTU North Island are committed to providing the guidance, training, and support necessary for success. Whether it’s through formal training programs, mentorship initiatives like ESAR, or simply one-on-one interactions with experienced professionals, we are here to ensure that every future sailor has the tools they need to thrive.

As we continue to train and develop the next generation of aviation maintainers, we remain dedicated to fostering an environment of excellence, professionalism, and teamwork. The future of naval aviation maintenance depends on the sailors we inspire today, and we are honored to play a part in shaping their journey.
