FORT MAGSAYSAY, Philippines — Soldiers from Charlie Company, 2nd Forward Support Medical Platoon, 3rd Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment, 25th Combat Aviation Brigade and Soldiers with the Philippine Army, conducted a subject matter expert exchange (SMEE) on medical evacuation, reinforcing interoperability and strengthening allied readiness on March 24, 2025 in support of Salaknib 2025.
The SMEE focused on enhancing medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) procedures, casualty treatment, and coordination between U.S. and Philippine forces. The exchange highlighted the critical role of seamless communication and shared protocols in responding to battlefield injuries and humanitarian crises.
“I think the SMEE benefited both militaries today,” said Capt. Erik Jon Rajunas, the 2nd Forward Support Medical Platoon Leader of Charlie Company, 3rd Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment, 25th Combat Aviation Brigade. “Training with our Philippine partners ensures that we can respond efficiently and effectively in times of need.”
During the SMEE, U.S. Army medics taught casualty triage, loading procedures, in-flight patient care, as well as the history of MEDEVAC utilizing the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters. Philippine Soldiers observed and participated in the class, gaining insights into rapid response techniques and advanced medical evacuation strategies.
Philippine Soldiers led informative discussions on navigating tropical terrain, managing medical logistics in remote locations, and adapting to environments with limited resources. Their instruction provided unique perspectives, experiences, and tactics to the U.S. Soldiers.
“It was very interesting to learn from their perspective and see how different their military MEDEVAC process is,” said Rajunas. “This exchange allows us to adapt and improve our own practices.”
The training reinforced the long-standing partnership between the two nations, ensuring both forces remain ready to respond to natural disasters, security challenges, and humanitarian missions. By strengthening U.S. - Philippine interoperability, the exercise underscored a shared commitment to regional stability and security.
