FORT CAVAZOS, Texas — Blue skies and warm temperatures were the perfect backdrop for the Main Exchange Outdoor Living Garden Center Grand Opening Saturday at Fort Cavazos.

The outdoor area bustled with patrons who perused assorted plants and flowers and participated in various activities to usher in the season.

“It’s spring; spring is here,” said Tonnica Wooden, sales area manager for the Fort Cavazos Main Exchange Outdoor Living area, Army and Air Force Exchange Service.

Wooden said the event was a great way to gather the community together, welcome the new season and introduce attendees to all Outdoor Living area has to offer.

“We can help get those front yards done, backyards, get those vegetables grown … whatever you need, whatever you can think of,” she said.

The event featured various family-friendly events, like planting seeds in small pots filled with soil to start a garden and painting terra-cotta pots, bird houses, bird feeders and rocks to spruce up outdoor areas and add color and personality.

Attendees also enjoyed flying kites, drawing with chalk, blowing bubbles and giveaways including garden benches, a grill and a canopy.

Pvt. Angel Oseguera, Alpha Battery, 4th Battalion, 5th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 69th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, enjoyed teaching his daughter Genesis, 5, how to fly a kite during the event. He explained he and his family just arrived at The Great Place and the event provided a good impression of the installation.

“I’m always working, so we don’t get to do outdoor activities,” he said. “It’s my first impression, so, hopefully, we can do more activities like this that are fun for everybody.”

Grace Fuchs, an Army spouse, said Fort Cavazos is her family’s first duty station and she appreciates events that celebrate the outdoors and warmer temperatures.

“This helps us get over the winter blues, so to speak,” she said. “We’re always looking for ways. We have little garden areas in our backyard, we put up our lights and our canopies. We bring everything out as soon as it’s like this, so (this event), it just adds to it.”

She added her son had lots of fun customizing his birdhouse in preparation for the birds that are starting to visit more often.

“Just seeing my kids light up, whether it be (Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation), Garden Center, (United Service Organizations), whatever, I’ve enjoyed it,” Fuchs said. “I’m glad Fort Cavazos does all these little things … not even little … they’re big to us. So, I’m blessed with it and I’m thankful for it.”

Gardeners can purchase flowers, plants, soil, mulch, garden tools and more at the Garden Center, and Fort Cavazos residents can visit Cavalry Family Housing’s Lawn and Garden Center to stock up on outdoor necessities, sign out lawn mowers, blowers and trimmers, replace filters and light bulbs and more, free of charge. Residents must present valid military I.D. and proof of residency to check out equipment.
