PANAMA CITY, Panama – With the consent of the Government of Panama, U.S. Marines from Marine Forces Reserve and Marine Forces South arrived in Panama ahead of the Central American Security Conference (CENTSEC).
A platoon of 50 Marines and Sailors from Company B, 1st Battalion, 8th Marines will attach to the U.S. Army’s 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade (SFAB) and conduct infantry training alongside the Panama National Aeronaval Service (SENAN). A detachment of up to four F/A-18 jets from Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 312 (VMFA-312) will provide static display support to CENTSEC. The U.S. Marine Forces Reserve Band will play several public concerts in Panama during CENTSEC and for cultural engagement with the people of Panama.
The Marines units traveling to Panama are based in New Orleans, Louisiana and Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. They will return to their bases in the U.S. after their partnership engagements with the SENAN, people of Panama and support of CENTSEC.
The SENAN is responsible for carrying out Panamanian naval and air operations. Its role is to perform protection, surveillance, security and defense of the air and maritime jurisdictional areas. They are experts at air, ground and maritime operations in littoral and jungle environments.
Alongside 1st SFAB foreign security force advisers, Marines of Bravo Company will make up a Joint Security Cooperation Element. During this training iteration, they will be able to exchange knowledge and best practices with their naval infantry counterparts in the SENAN. Panamanian and U.S. Marines will be training together to enhance their naval infantry skills, including marksmanship, land navigation, planning and orders development, and jungle warfare.
