MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. – Barbeques and basketball games are now on the horizon. Marines and sailors from I Marine Expeditionary Force and volunteers from The Home Depot Foundation renovated an outdoor recreational area on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, April 2, 2025.
Year-round, operational units across MCB Camp Pendleton receive community support through unit adoption programs and base volunteer efforts that increase morale for Marines and Sailors and enhance units’ collective operational readiness. The adoption programs and volunteer efforts are indicative of long-standing and close relationships between the service members who serve on MCB Camp Pendleton and the residents in the local areas.
The Home Depot Foundation volunteered time and resources during the second deliberate I MEF and Marine Corps Installations West-wide maintenance stand-down, dubbed Operation Clean Sweep II.
Working alongside the barracks residents, Home Depot associates renovated the firepit area with new benches and plants, installed new backboards and nets on the basketball court, and set up new barbeque grills. This project, alongside other maintenance and renovation efforts part of Operation Clean Sweep II, directly impact the readiness of 1st Marine Logistics Group by providing the Marines and Sailors a quality place to relax and build camaraderie after the challenges of their day-to-day jobs.
U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Michael S. Cederholm, commanding general of I Marine Expeditionary Force, visited Marines, Sailors and Home Depot associates as they finished renovating the outdoor recreational area.
“This partnership and the support we get from the community, from our citizens at large, is what makes us stronger together,” said Cederholm. “It’s the glue that binds us.”
Part of the larger Barracks 360 Reset initiative, Operation Clean Sweep II builds upon the success of the first iteration by sustaining improved barracks conditions and further transforming I MEF’s organizational culture by reinvesting our time, resources, training and efforts into the barracks. Barracks 360 Reset aligns with the Marine Corps’ commitment to the long-term modernization of unaccompanied housing through the implementation of Barracks 2030, which will ensure the barracks are viable for generations of Marines to come.
