MOODY AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. — The Military Housing Office hosted a Home Buyers Workshop at Moody Air Force Base, Georgia, March 27, 2025.
The workshop featured three guest speakers: Dave Skaggs, a home inspector; Steve Miller, president of the Valdosta Board of Realtors; and Gretchen Johnson, a Veterans Affairs loan expert. Each subject matter expert briefed participants on the ins and outs of buying a home.
“I bought my first house a few years back, and honestly, taking a home buyers class beforehand would have been great,” said Staff Sgt. John Michale, 23rd Communications Squadron cybersecurity noncommissioned officer in charge. “So when I saw this, I thought, ‘Perfect, a chance to learn something useful for next time!’”
The course covered many important topics to help first-time home buyers, including how to use a VA loan.
“The advantage the VA loan gives you when buying a house is huge,” said Senior Airman Cole Duhme, 23rd Communications Squadron, cybersecurity technician. “The best rates you can get as a military member are 0% down. I also didn’t know how much it costs in additional fees and unexpected expenses that no one talks about.”
While VA loans offer great benefits, hidden costs can still arise. Home-buying classes help buyers stay informed and better prepared, making the process smoother and more manageable in today’s competitive market.
“I highly recommend it to new and repeat home buyers,” Michale said. “This class gives you a little edge in this competitive market and helps you navigate the complexities of buying a home.”
