MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - Warmth and sunshine are making their return to Cherry Point's weather forecasts. What better way to enjoy the summer weather than spending the day on the inland waterways right here aboard the air station?

The Pelican Point Marina is an outdoor oasis and offers that opportunity.

The marina features about 20 kayaks (12 brand new) and 13 canoes.

"We're working hard on getting more," said Matt Houde, manager of the marina. "It's first come, first served."

Canoeists and kayakers are required to wear life vests and are given a quick safety brief prior to hitting the water.

Canoes and kayaks rent for $4 an hour, $20 a day or $30 for an entire weekend. The marina is open Wednesday through Sunday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"The water is about 65 degrees right now and feels great," said Houde.

Anchors for the watercraft can also be checked out for those who fi sh. A North Carolina state fishing license and base permit are required for fishing aboard the air station, which can be purchased at the Marine Corps Exchange.

Lori A. Johnson, assistant manager at the marina, suggests visitors call the marina ahead of time to check for rental availability and possible weather warnings.

Pelican Point Marina also offers an array of picnic areas with fi shing ponds, barbecue grills, playgrounds, horseshoe pits and overnight camping.

Johnson said there are some great areas where people can really get away and have some outdoor fun.

Flipper may even stop by for a visit. With the water continually washing in and out of the Neuse River at Mother Nature's discretion, people can see dolphins right here in Slocum Creek, said Houde.

With 10 different sites available, each offering its own amenities, people can choose from a variety of areas.

For larger groups, lodges are available and may be used for weddings, meetings and parties.

Reservations must be made for each site, whether it's a family outing or unit barbecue.

The marina accepts reservations seven days a week.
