Team Dover reservists learned about retirement benefits at the Air Force Reserve Retirement Counseling Roadshow April 5-6 at Dover Air Force Base, Delaware.
Lieutenant Colonel Angela McCabe, Air Reserve Personnel Center Reserve Retirement Counseling Cell deputy, conducted three briefings. Information covered the areas of estimated retirement pay, reduced retirement pay age, the Reserve Component Survivor Benefit Plan and other retirement related issues.
McCabe said retirement programs can be very complicated, and she enjoys educating reservists to ensure they are making the best decisions for themselves and their families. She said the two areas she really likes to focus on are the reduced retirement pay age and the Reserve Component Survivor Benefit Plan due to their complexity.
“Those are two big areas that people don’t have enough knowledge about,” she said, “The earlier they can understand and make informed decisions, the better they will be setup for retirement.”
Senior Master Sgt. Thomas Vilgos, 512th Airlift Wing Inspector General superintendent, said he was impressed by the information he learned during the session.
“She covered a lot in this one hour,” he said. “It was insightful on the retirement points, the pay system and the Reserve Component Survivor Benefit Plan. I’m glad I came, and I would encourage anybody near retirement age to attend this briefing.”
McCabe said she prefers to brief reservists a few years before they retire.
“I want to see people before they hit 20 satisfactory years,” she said. “It’s best to see them for the first time when they are at 18 or 19 satisfactory years. It gives them the chance to make the best decisions, because they can plan before the decisions are required.”
McCabe said people that missed the roadshow are not out of luck. The retirement cell is made up of 18 people who conduct individual briefings as well. She said reservists can expect the briefing to last about 75 minutes, and they can schedule an appointment by emailing arpc.dpt.rrcc@us.af.mil.
