HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. – Cadets from Tuskegee University’s Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps Detachment 015 visited Hurlburt Field for a base tour, Feb. 26, 2024.
The visit offered cadets the opportunity to learn about the 1st Special Operations Wing and gain a closer look at the operations and facilities at Hurlburt Field through immersion.
The tour began with a MC-130J Commando II capabilities briefing, focused on missions such as air-to-air refueling, infiltration, exfiltration and resupply of special operations forces.
Following the brief, cadets participated in an incentive flight on the MC-130J, an experience designed to give them a deeper understanding of the operational environment and to motivate them as they pursue careers in the Air Force.
“Our cadets noticed the passions and motivations for the mission and how the enforcement of standards empowered every Air Commando to get their part of the mission done safely,” said Maj. Scott Dolar, the operations officer for (AFROTC) Detachment 015.
The visit also included stops at several key facilities, including the Hurlburt Field Medical Center, where cadets learned about the base’s care for base beneficiaries, ensuring a fit and ready force for deployment. The group then toured Base Operations and Air Traffic Control, gaining insight into the coordination and management of daily flightline operations.
“This tour had a profound impact on my career aspirations. In many ways it felt like this trip was designed specifically for me,” said Iyana Hudson, an AFROTC Detachment 015 cadet. “Experiencing the breathtaking view from the ATC tower while gaining deeper insight into a field I’ve been passionate about solidified my desire to work in this career and gave me a clearer vision of what to strive for.”
The 1 SOW supports a wide range of global operations, including special operations and humanitarian missions. During the tour, Airmen from the 1 SOW provide the cadets with insights into day-to-day activities across base and provide cadets with exposure to real-world operations and the roles they may take on in the future.
“This experience provided our cadets with an opportunity to see their job waiting at the end of their AFROTC journey and to visualize themselves eventually leading teams within the special operations community,” Dolar said.
