SAN DIEGO - Commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet (CNSP) named the 2024 Sea and Shore Sailors of the Year, April 17 during the annual Sailor of the Year week at CNSP headquarters on Naval Amphibious Base Coronado.
The selections were announced at the dinner wrapping up the week hosted by Commander, Naval Surface Forces/CNSP Vice Adm. Brendan McLane. Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Steven D. Hill, assigned to the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Milius (DDG 69) was announced as the Sea Sailor of the Year. Culinary Specialist 1st Class Bryan R. Ventura, assigned to Assault Craft Unit One (ACU 1) was announced as the Shore Sailor of the Year.
Hill reported onboard USS MILIUS (DDG 69) as Senior Medical Department Representative in August 2022. He was shortly underway and participated in multiple patrols in 7th Area of Responsibility, qualifying three training teams. His programs achieved a 92% during TAV which was later turned into MRI, passing all Mobility exercises, RED-E6, and earning 3 Green H’s consecutively.
In November 2022, Ventura reported to Afloat Training Group Pacific as the Assistant Leading Petty Officer for the San Diego Training Team. He contributed to the completion of 20 shipboard training events, resulting in 100% Supply Management Certifications. In September 2023, he was assigned to ACU-1, where he was selected for a temporary assignment as the Leading Culinary Specialist aboard Arleigh-Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Preble (DDG 88). Upon completion of this duty, he returned to ACU-1 as the Supply Department Leading Petty Officer. Excelling in his leadership role, he was named Senior Sailor of the Year for Fiscal Year 2024.
“This accomplishment has not just been about this year, it's been about my whole career, but most importantly, representing my Sailors that have the faith in me to lead them and the support of my chain of command," said Ventura. “They set me up for success, they've also had faith in me to lead sailors at the command, and it's just something so humbling, something I get to take back for them and it represents them, and my chain of command.”
CNSP Force Master Chief, Command Master Chief Larry Lynch spoke highly of these two Sailors and their success so far in the Navy encouraging them to keep striving for excellence as they move on to compete at the next level.
“It means a lot to be able to take time to recognize the best of the best of our surface warriors. You know, it takes a village to be a top performer,” said Lynch. “The command invests a lot into the Sailors. They take the time to put them in the right position, take the time to recognize them, and this is the future of our Navy we owe it to them to recognize them accordingly.”

The mission of CNSP is to man, train, and equip the Surface Force to provide fleet commanders with credible naval power to control the sea and project power ashore.
