Investing in its local workforce, Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Korea has launched a new mentorship program presented entirely in Korean. This initiative aims to foster the professional growth of junior employees by providing clear pathways for career advancement while deepening their understanding of DLA's mission on a global scale.
The program seeks to increase training across multiple functional areas that are critical to the success of operations within the distribution center.
“We are using peer driven mentorship programs to improve communication of the overall DLA mission, enhance workforce readiness, strengthen leadership skills, boost English proficiency and grow in data literacy,” said Army Lt. Col. Celina Pargo, commander, DLA Distribution, Korea. "Training the local workforce on computer applications like Microsoft Office or the in-house QLIK application yields exponential returns on the time invested in the workforce."
“Through this training, I feel like I have upgraded myself to the next level,” said Song Yong Hwang, transportation team lead. Song has been with DLA Distribution, Korea, since the opening of the distribution center. “Now I am in a position to produce reports and presentations. This training has helped me tremendously, feel confident I will be able to develop further and work more efficiently in the future.”
As part of the DLA Director’s Campaign of Learning and the people transformation imperative, the training is focused on developing and retaining talent through continuous education and professional growth.
“The instructors are all seasoned internal professionals who are voluntarily sharing their experience to foster a transfer of knowledge and mentorship,” said Ms. O Yon Hyong, support specialist supervisor, and champion of the training initiative.
The DLA Distribution Korea team is a small, dedicated team of professionals made primarily of local nationals. This first of its kind program at the distribution center strengthens the U.S. and Republic of Korea alliance through a ground up approach that acknowledges and empowers the shared responsibility of readiness and deterrence on the Korean peninsula.
