Inspired by former president George H.W. Bush’s inaugural speech on Jan. 20, 1989, we commit to a full day of service once a year to support our local community.
“I have spoken of a thousand points of light, of all the community organizations that are spread like stars throughout the Nation, doing good,” said Bush. “Any definition of a successful life must include service to others.”
This year, Sailors will provide many hours of service to local organizations such as Trails of Purpose, USS Nautilus and USS Wisconsin Museum ships, Keep Norfolk Beautiful, Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption, and many other organizations.
“Giving back to the community means, bringing everybody together and bridging the gap between civilians and the Navy to come together and get the job done,” said Chief Aviation Boatswain’s Mate Kiara Harris, a member of George H.W. Bush’s air department. “It’s an opportunity for Sailors to get out and have fun while also giving back to the community, doing something different other than being on the ship.”
Not only are we giving back to our local community, but also volunteering off the ship helps boost morale for our Sailors.
“We have found that when we get Sailors engaged in volunteerism it gives them a sense of purpose, achievement and accomplishment,” said Lieutenant Karl Gibbs, a Chaplain aboard USS George H.W. Bush “When they finish, they can look back and see a job well done and feel proud about that.”
Much like their namesake, the Sailors of George H.W. Bush actively live a life of service in and out of uniform. By volunteering around the local community, Sailors are able to give back and be a beacon of hope and inspiration for those around them, carrying on Bush’s legacy and setting the example for other service members.
