Story by Senior Airman Victoria Nuzzi

    432nd Wing

The 432nd Wing/432nd Air Expeditionary Wing has seen a lot of changes throughout its history since first activating in 1943 as the 432nd Observation Group. It has seen the deactivation, reactivation and creation of entire squadrons throughout the decades. On April 23, 2025, the 432nd Communication Unit activated as the 432nd Communications Squadron, the newest squadron in the 432d WG’s support arsenal.

“There are so many benefits to us being a squadron,” said 2nd Lt. Camille Sosa, 432nd CS officer in charge of client systems. “We are going to get better funding and manning, which we have had issues with in the past because we were a unit.”

The 432d CS will be able to upgrade the communication infrastructure on base to serve the base efficiently. This is directly correlated to them becoming a squadron. This is because more funds will be directly allocated to them instead of the funds going through the 432nd Support Squadron first and then all the units under them.

“A good example of base infrastructure we can improve is now that we're our own squadron, we can start standing up our own Base Equipment Custodian Office over here rather than having to use Nellis’s, which will make it easier for users and us to acquire new equipment,” said Sosa.

The 432d CS will also be able to improve their manning because they will be allocated more positions and will better serve the 5,000 users they have on base. This will also take the strain off the airmen currently working in the squadron, who could use more help.

“Another positive thing we hope will come from this is that our squadron’s morale will be higher,” said Sosa. “In the past, we have not had the funds for even small morale events, and as a unit, it was hard to get our airmen recognized for awards. We can now recognize our people at the squadron level and hopefully some of them will be able to win at the group level or higher.”

The process of activating the squadron has been over two years in the making. It first started with the 432nd Wing commander at the time, Col. Eric Schmidt, who is now retired.

Lt. Col. Jesse Caldwell, 432nd CS commander, spoke about how proud he was of the squadron during the activation ceremony. He could not wait to see its future and how it would benefit Creech.
