    354th RANS: Staying sighted in

    ALASKA, UNITED STATES

Story by Airman 1st Class Spencer Hanson

    354th Fighter Wing

EIELSON AIR FORCE BASE, Alaska – Fifth-generation and fourth-generation aircraft pilots need vast air and ground space to effectively deliver lethal airpower. The 354th Range Squadron ensures these pilots can achieve this objective by simulating real-life combat in the Joint Pacific Alaska Range Complex.

The JPARC is the largest instrumented air, ground and electronic combat training range in the world. While it is split between the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Army, it is managed by the 354th RANS.

“We manage the JPARC for training all U.S. military branches as well as our allies and partners,” said Master Sgt. Timothy Hall, 354th RANS senior enlisted leader. “We handle scheduling usage for the range, providing threat emitters and pilot communication capabilities throughout the range. Additionally we execute maintenance of the range ensuring it meets its users’ training requirements.”

The RANS is made up of seven sections: scheduling, maintenance, airspace management, engineering, plans/programs, support, and threat systems. Each section is organized to set up the range to the best of its ability so pilots can use the area and give their full focus on training.

This squadron provides portable devices that shoot threat emitters which are props for pilots to practice dropping ammunition on realistic threat representation. All of which are amplified by its best asset, 77,000 square miles of available airspace allowing pilots to use realistic combat maneuvers.

“The JPARC’s size allows its users to use extremely realistic combat maneuvers,” said Maj. Jeffrey Teufel, 354th RANS assistant director of operations.” Making it the only range in the U.S. that creates the level of training that we need for a pacing threat.”

The RANS also plays a vital role in the preparation and execution of RED FLAG-Alaska and Distant Frontier, Eielson’s major flying exercises held during the summer that focus on joint operability with allies and partners.
