MAZAR-E-SHARIF, Afghanistan -- Located near Camp Mike Spann and Mazar-e-Sharif, is a small coalition camp named Dehdadi II, and although it's still under construction, more military units continue to arrive every day.

Some of these Soldiers, members of the 10th Brigade Support Battalion from the 10th Mountain Division's 1st Brigade Combat Team, are helping open an additional dining facility for the ever-increasing influx of new troops.

"Our dining area's name is La Dehdadi Café," laughed Sgt. 1st Class Shantay Mayfield, senior food operation sergeant from Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 10th BSB.

According to Mayfield, there are currently three United States Army units running the new dining facility together – 10th BSB, 557th Maintenance Company from Fort Irwin, Calif., and HHC, 87th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion from Fort Stewart, Ga. Each does their own part to serve the expanding camp.

These units have been setting up the facility for the past three weeks and the first meal was served during dinner hours, May 12. Included in the set up was coordinating with units available on Dehdadi II to level the area and set the foundations for the mobile dining facility.

"You don't just put a tent down, you have to have a floor," said Staff Sgt. Michael Hood, food operation sergeant, HHC, 87th CSSB, "If you didn't put the wood floor and it rained you would be in the mud."

Most of the construction in the area is done by the Navy Seabees.

"I've been here for three weeks and the two weeks prior it was just dirt," Hood said. "The Navy is pretty much our biggest asset out here as far as getting anything."

The Seabees level roads, connect power, lay gravel, pour concrete and construct buildings, said Hood.

"Like getting something wired," Hood said. "We probably have someone that could do it, but it's better to get the certified electrician and that's the Seabees."

Soldiers in 10th BSB also maintain security for Dehdadi II.

"Most of 10th BSB Soldiers are working on tower guard and the entry control point for Dehdadi II," said Sgt. Luke Plant, ammunition technician, HHC, 10th BSB.

More of 10th BSB is planning to move out to Dehdadi II from Camp Mike Spann this summer, but for now, the units currently there will build up the area for continued growth.

In addition to the 10th BSB, the 557th Maintenance Company and the 87th CSSB, Soldiers from the Fort Hood's 2nd Engineer Battalion and Sailors from the Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 4 have been working hard to make improvements to ensure comfort for deployed troops.
