FORT DIX, N.J. - As the guest speaker at the Army Support Activity-Dix Unit Ministry Team Dining-Out, Chap. (Brig. Gen.) Donald Rutherford, Army deputy chief of chaplains, spoke on the role of personnel in the formation of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst at Club Dix, April 30.
The Kinderhook, N.Y., native encouraged those in attendance by telling them that just as the Israelites in the Bible needed master builders to rebuild Jerusalem, so too must the personnel at JB MDL be the master builders for the new tri-base installation.
The general said that the joint base is a new creation, and it would take new dreams and visions from those assigned to be able to construct it.
"Everyone at the joint base is here for a reason, for such a time as this, and must be willing to participate in the creation of the new installation. All parties need to be willing to reach across the fence and work with their sister service members," Rutherford said.
"The general put it in perspective when he said that all of the pieces may not look like they go together, but when we all do our part, over time, this work that is under construction will become a model joint base," said Sgt. Ariel Castillo, a chaplain assistant who hails from Lowell, Mass.
Chaplains from Lakehurst Naval Air Engineering Station, ASA-Dix, McGuire Air Force Base, and Fort Devens in Massachusetts were in attendance.
