FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, Pa. – The door of the Humvee opens and soldiers rush to get the casualty on the stretcher and away to safety. The casualty is simulated, but the training the soldiers are receiving is real and valuable for their upcoming deployment.
More than 80 soldiers with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard's 213th Area Support Group trained with the Humvee Egress Assistance Trainer here today as part of the Pre-mobilization Training Assistance Element's validation process.
"It was awesome!" exclaimed Sgt. 1st Class Karen Schwanger, 213th Personnel Company.
That characterization applies equally to the quality of the training and to the ride in the simulator, which turns completely upside-down. The mission requires the soldiers in the Humvee replica to escape while upside-down and also remove a dummy casualty.
"This lane gives them a real experience," said Sgt. Ryan Piersol, 213th Personnel Company, the trainer who operated the simulator.
Schwanger added that the exercise would reduce her panic level if such an event happened in Iraq.
The trainers did everything possible to simulate a realistic experience. Participants wore full battle gear and had to remove the casualty to a safe distance and carry out the correct procedure to call for medical evacuation.
The HEAT simulator is just one of many lanes this group of soldiers will participate in over the next two weeks as part of the PTAE process to prepare for deployment.
Practical, hands-on training events, such as the HEAT simulator prepare soldiers for a range of experiences that can occur while on deployment and give them the confidence of having a real experience in a safe training environment.
