FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, Pa. -- The 19D Cavalry Scout school for Military Occupational Specialty transfer students conducted the last training lane of the cycle as part of their final field training exercise here May 20.

The training lane consisted of several different exercises and incorporated all facets of training and instruction that students were exposed to during the two-week course.

The field training exercise that was conducted was the final exercise that students were required to go through before they could graduate.

"This FTX is a culmination of everything they've learned over the past two weeks," said Staff Sgt. Raymond Nauyokas, a Cavalry Scout trainer from 1st Battalion, 166th Cavalry Regiment here.

The students received a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on practical exercises in the first half of the course to prepare for the FTX where all of those skills would be put to use in 'real-world' scenarios.

"During the FTX the they will have to act as a quick reaction force, respond to sniper contact, provide security over-watch, as well as more basic soldiering skills such as calling in a 9-line medical evacuation request, land navigation, and combat movement drills," said Nauyokas.

After a short QRF mission, the scout students moved into the newly established urban operations training site here for various training.

"Last night they came into the town and discovered a hidden weapons cache in
the basement of the town hotel building," said Staff Sgt. Kurt Spieles, the course manager for the Cavalry Scout training school. "The mission today is to move into the town and destroy the weapons cache that was found last night. They are coming in with no intelligence on enemy numbers or weaponry, so it should be interesting."

The students moved into the town, encountered opposing-force resistance and took several casualties but were able to complete the mission nonetheless.

"This training is great," said Sgt. Kimo Wong of the 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team located in Oahu, Hawaii. "I've never experienced training like this; it's so realistic. Usually training events are built up to be great then become a 'no-show', this was hands-on realistic and I loved it," said Wong. "The urban ops town was unbelievable. I'm used to training in connex villages, sometimes they are even cardboard!" Wong added in jest.

The Cavalry Scout trainers from the 1/166th Regiment go the extra mile to provide tough, realistic, and interesting training for the potential scouts that come to their school. The stellar performance of the students during their FTX is a reflection of the devotion and hard work the trainers put into their job.
